Being True to Yourself When Downsizing
Jacy Jarrell
Downsizing is not shrinking, it is right-sizing
When people hear downsizing, they picture giving things up. I see it differently. A good downsizing move is about clearing away what no longer serves you so the things you love have room to breathe. That shift in mindset changes everything about how you search.
Take the time to know your needs and wants
The biggest mistake I see is people starting the search before they know what they truly need. Do you want to host the holidays, or are you happier with a quiet dinner for two? Do you need a home office, a guest room, or both? Do you want to be walking distance to downtown, or do you prefer a quiet street with a garden?
Separate what you need from what you want
Needs are the non-negotiables: the number of bedrooms, the layout, the budget, the location that keeps you connected to the life you love. Wants are the nice-to-haves you can be flexible on. Write both lists down. When a home feels overwhelming or a decision feels hard, that list is your anchor.
Let the space, not the past, guide you
It is easy to hold onto a home because of what it used to be. But the question that matters is whether it fits who you are today and where you are headed. The right smaller home should feel lighter, easier to care for, and closer to the things that make you happy.
We'll find the right solution together
Downsizing can bring up a lot of emotion, and that is completely normal. My job is to be patient, ask the right questions, and help you find the home that is genuinely right for this next stage of life. Take your time. We'll find the right solution together.
